Two of the most common requests at our clinic — ear wax removal (syringing) for blocked ears and IV iron infusion therapy for iron deficiency. Both are performed onsite by experienced GPs, with Dr Khawaja Bilal Akbar offering iron infusion therapy as a special interest area.
Botanic Ridge Doctors is a bulk-billed family medical clinic with onsite Allied Health, located in Botanic Ridge Village. Our team includes experienced GPs, practice nurses, and a network of visiting specialists.
Standard GP consultations are bulk billed for all eligible Medicare patients. Walk-ins are accommodated where possible.
Excessive ear wax is one of the most common GP-treatable causes of hearing loss, blocked ear feeling, and tinnitus. Our GPs use gentle warm-water syringing or microsuction (where indicated) to safely remove wax under direct visualisation.
Persistent fatigue? Hair thinning? Breathlessness with mild exertion? Restless legs? Iron deficiency is one of the most common — and most missed — diagnoses in Australia. When oral iron tablets aren't tolerated or absorbed, an intravenous (IV) iron infusion delivers a single corrective dose.
Dr Khawaja Bilal Akbar holds iron infusion as a special interest area and performs the procedure regularly at our clinic.
Ear syringing and iron infusions are performed by practice nurses with GP review. Both are common nursing procedures with strong evidence base.
Your GP confirms the indication — examining the ear canal for syringing, or reviewing iron studies and symptoms for infusion.
Ear syringing is typically same-day. Iron infusion requires a longer chair-time appointment (90 minutes).
Ear syringing uses warm water lavage. Iron infusion uses ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject) delivered intravenously over 15–60 minutes.
Ear syringing: a brief review confirms the canal is clear. Iron infusion: observation for 30 minutes post-procedure to monitor for reactions.
These procedures are appropriate for:
