05 What to expect

How your appointment typically flows.

Electrocardiograms (ECG) at Botanic Ridge Doctors are performed by a practice nurse and reviewed by your GP. The recording takes 5–10 minutes.

i.

Discuss with your GP

An ECG is added to your GP consultation when clinically indicated.

ii.

Preparation

Wear comfortable clothing. You'll be asked to expose your chest, ankles and wrists for electrode placement. The procedure is non-invasive and painless.

iii.

Recording

Ten electrodes are placed on standard anatomical landmarks. The recording itself takes approximately 30 seconds.

iv.

Interpretation

Your GP reviews the trace during the same visit. Findings are explained and an action plan is made — referral to cardiology, repeat testing, or reassurance.

08 Questions, answered

Common questions.

Is the ECG painful?
No — ECGs are completely non-invasive. The electrodes simply detect electrical signals already produced by your heart.
How long does it take?
The recording takes about 30 seconds. Including preparation and electrode placement, allow 10 minutes.
Can I drive home after?
Yes — there is no medication or sedation involved. You can resume normal activities immediately.
What if the ECG is abnormal?
Your GP discusses findings during the consultation. Most abnormalities are minor; significant findings may lead to cardiology referral, further imaging, or medication review.
