04 What to expect

How your appointment typically flows.

Psychology consultations are with our visiting psychologists. Most patients access psychology under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from their GP.

i.

Mental Health Care Plan from your GP

Your GP completes an MHCP — a 30–45 minute consultation that establishes goals and Medicare-rebated psychology access.

ii.

Initial assessment

Your first psychology session is typically 60 minutes. The psychologist takes a full history and discusses your concerns.

iii.

Therapy

Approaches may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or other evidence-based modalities tailored to your needs.

iv.

MHCP review

After 6 sessions your GP can refer for up to 4 additional rebated sessions (10 per calendar year total under standard MHCP).

06 Fees & Medicare

Transparent pricing & bulk billing.

Psychology sessions attract a private fee. With a Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates apply (up to 10 sessions per calendar year). Out-of-pocket gap depends on the psychologist's fee schedule — please confirm with reception. Bulk-billed psychology may be available for eligible patients with concession cards (subject to availability).

07 Questions, answered

Common questions.

How do I access psychology?
Book a longer GP consultation for a Mental Health Care Plan. Your GP assesses whether psychology is appropriate and writes a referral.
How many sessions does Medicare cover?
Up to 10 sessions per calendar year — typically 6 initial sessions, then 4 more after a GP review. Group therapy options may add additional rebated sessions.
Can I see a psychologist without a plan?
Yes — self-funded appointments are available. Without an MHCP no Medicare rebate applies.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes — psychology sessions are confidential within standard professional and legal limits (e.g. risk of harm). Your psychologist will explain this at your first session.
